Standardized test assesses nursing students’ practice readiness

Elsevier Health has developed a standardized, objective test to help instructors assess nursing students’ clinical judgment and practice readiness.

The HESI Clinical Practice Readiness Assessment, launched March 6, is an online test intended to be administered at the end of nursing programs. The exam includes virtual patient simulations and questions similar to the Next Generation NCLEX, assessing whether students have the knowledge and skills required to safely and independently care for patients.

The assessment coincides with the Next Gen NCLEX’s increased focus on clinical preparedness and comes as the number of practice-ready nurses has decreased in recent years.

“Nursing programs that have struggled to measure practice readiness vs. test readiness due to resource constraints and the limitations of currently available assessment frameworks and tools now have a standard, reliable assessment solution with which to measure their students’ clinical competencies,” Brent Gordon, Elsevier’s president of nursing and health education, said in a March 6 news release.
