Bill Would Require Rhode Island Payors to Disclose Reimbursement Rates

A bill would require all health insurance companies in Rhode Island to disclose the rates at which they reimburse hospitals for services and equipment, according to a Sun Staff report.

Sen. Dennis Algiere (R) and Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (D) have proposed the legislation in an effort to reduce variations in reimbursements for the same hospital services. Payors aren't required to disclose the rates they pay different hospitals under current Rhode Island law.

The lawmakers also said the bill would help the uninsured know the best possible price for the services they need and help keep the healthcare insurance industry honest about pricing, according to the report.
