Becker's "Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Heart Programs" list showcases healthcare institutions celebrated for their outstanding cardiovascular care, superior patient outcomes and advanced technologies. These heart programs are also at the forefront of cardiology research, making impactful discoveries in the field.

These organizations frequently earn top rankings from U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades and other prestigious entities. Committed to excellence and growth, they provide top-tier care for thousands of patients every year and continually expand their heart care capabilities.

AdventHealth Orlando (Fla.). AdventHealth Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute, among the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the nation, averages 72,000 patient visits each year, making it the biggest provider of cardiovascular care in Florida. Formed in 1967, the institute is headquartered at AdventHealth Orlando’s 1,400-bed hospital and includes more than 300 experts in 15 subspecialties, providing services in inpatient, outpatient and community settings. Last year, the AdventHealth team performed approximately 4,600 heart surgeries, 57,000 cardiovascular, electrophysiology and catheterization lab procedures, and over 2,500 vascular surgeries. The institute offers the community access to groundbreaking clinical trials, innovative programs and new treatment options. It works in conjunction with AdventHealth Research Institute, which manages over $1.2 million in heart, lung and vascular-specific research and offers more than 30 clinical trials each year. AdventHealth Orlando also houses the only heart and lung transplant program in Central Florida, one of just five in the state. As part of its commitment to ensure all community members have access to high levels of care, AdventHealth also operates the Trina Hidalgo Heart Care Center, serving Central Florida patients who are uninsured or on Medicaid and living at or below federal poverty levels. Last year, Trina Hidalgo Heart Care Center saw over 2,800 patient visits.

Advocate Christ Medical Center (Oak Lawn, Ill.). The 788-bed Advocate Christ Medical Center, part of Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health, is a major affiliate hospital for various specialties, including cardiovascular services. The Advocate Heart Institute at Advocate Christ Medical Center houses the most extensive cardiology program in the state of Illinois, boasting more than 1,200 successful surgeries and over 5,000 cardiac procedures per year. In addition, it features the busiest ventricular assist device program in the state and one of the five busiest in the nation. The medical center's physicians were the first in the U.S. to implant a HeartMate II ventricular assist device for destination therapy, the first in Illinois to perform robotic mitral valve repair surgery, and serve as regular contributors to medical journals like The New England Journal of Medicine. The hospital is ranked as No. 30 in the nation for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24. 

Arkansas Children's (Little Rock). Arkansas Children's has 30 beds, 34 cardiologists, 17 advanced practice registered nurses, three surgeons and six anesthesiologists. It is a premier destination for full-spectrum, multidisciplinary pediatric heart care. The system is currently participating in three separate clinical trials and partaking in partial heart transplant research. More than 700 procedures have been performed in its cath lab over the past year, and the hospital was the first pediatric cardiovascular intensive care unit in the nation to launch "Angel Eye" remote monitoring for patients and families. 

Ascension Borgess Hospital (Kalamazoo, Mich.). Ascension Borgess Hospital’s Heart Institute is nationally recognized for its cardiovascular care, offering minimally invasive heart valve procedures and treatments for a wide range of heart conditions, including atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. The institute provides comprehensive services such as cardiac catheterization, noninvasive testing, electrophysiology and advanced surgical care. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for procedures like open-heart surgeries, ventricular assist device heart pumps, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation life support and various structural heart repairs. The hospital, a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, hosts an annual heart screening event, which saw a 13% increase in attendance in 2024. Ascension Borgess has earned recognition from Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 best Hospitals for cardiac care and stroke care, and is ranked No. 1 in Michigan for cardiac and stroke care. The hospital is actively involved in cardiovascular research, participating in significant studies and trials aimed at advancing treatment options and management strategies.

Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center (Milwaukee). Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center offers advanced treatments and groundbreaking research in heart care. It is the only hospital in Wisconsin to provide the pBranch device for aneurysms near the kidney and customized stent grafts for unusual aneurysms. The hospital's specialized programs include a comprehensive cardiothoracic anesthesia team and a large ventricular assist device program. Aurora St. Luke’s is recognized for its expertise in minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement and heart transplants, having performed the Midwest’s first heart transplant in 1968. The center also pioneers hybrid ablation for atrial fibrillation and utilizes state-of-the-art 4-D ultrasound imaging. The hospital is ranked at No. 43 nationally by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24. 

Baptist Health South Florida (Coral Gables). Baptist Health's cardiac institute, Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, has 44 specialists and has been serving the community for over 35 years. Baptist Health is the largest, most comprehensive heart and vascular institute in South Florida and features new technologies to treat aneurysms, vein and artery blockages, and holes in the heart. The team also prioritizes minimally invasive techniques to shorten hospital stays and recovery times. The institute is the first in the U.S. to use technology developed with Philips technology, which makes it easier for doctors to perform image-guided procedures for heart and vascular disease. Mortality for all cardiac surgeries at the facility is better than the benchmark, and so is the 30-day remission rate.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). At the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center, cardiology teams deliver comprehensive heart healthcare, ranging from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and recovery. Utilizing advanced imaging technology and minimally invasive techniques rooted in research, the hospital offers innovative treatment options and a multidisciplinary team including specialists in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and critical care. The team focuses on early diagnosis and prevention through thorough evaluations and genetic testing, with interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists that excel in cutting-edge catheter procedures, specialized programs for women’s heart disease, sports cardiology and aortic diseases. The center also provides patients with access to clinical trials and new treatments. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital at No. 35 in the nation for cardiology for 2023-24. 

Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano (Texas). Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano is renowned for its cardiac and vascular care, provided by a team of nearly 1,000 employees and expert physicians. As one of America’s busiest and highest-rated heart hospitals, it performs life-saving procedures, including endovascular and coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries, heart valve operations and ventricular assist device implantations. The hospital offers advanced diagnostic imaging, outpatient consultations and treatment plans for complex conditions. Hosting over 120 clinical trials, it stands as the only community hospital in U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 to offer such extensive research opportunities. Treating over 80,000 patients annually from 46 states and 12 countries, the facility has grown from a 68-bed hospital to a 114-bed institution with top rankings in cardiac surgery outcomes and left ventricular assist device implantations. The hospital has earned numerous accolades, including a 5-star rating from CMS.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). The CardioVascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center unites specialists in cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery to treat all heart and vascular conditions. The division of cardiovascular medicine offers comprehensive preventive care and advanced medical and interventional therapies from board-certified cardiologists who also serve on the Harvard Medical School faculty. The institute boasts some of the nation's best outcomes and patient satisfaction scores, featuring cutting-edge facilities such as Boston's first all-digital catheterization suites and advanced electrophysiology labs with 3-D navigation for treating arrhythmias. Notable programs include the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Center and specialized outpatient clinics for arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation and diabetic heart care in partnership with Boston-based Joslin Diabetes Center. In addition, the division of cardiac surgery consistently earns a 3-star quality rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for coronary bypass grafting, a distinction held by only 12-15% of hospitals nationwide. 

Catholic Medical Center (Manchester, N.H.). The New England Heart & Vascular Institute at Catholic Medical Center is renowned for pioneering advancements and comprehensive services in cardiovascular care. With a team of over 50 specialists, the medical center leads in cutting-edge treatments, including being the first in the world to complete several clinical trials and procedures like Boston Scientific's WATCHMAN ASAP-TOO trial and the implantation of innovative devices such as the Aveir DR dual-chamber pacemaker. The center is deeply committed to high-quality heart care and has extensive experience, performing over 24,000 open-heart procedures and over 5,000 transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures.

Children's Health (Dallas). The Heart Center at Children's Health has a bed count of 64 and is staffed by 386 specialists. The center has achieved notable success in cardiac surgeries, with a low operative mortality rate of 0.5 per 100 index cases and near-zero surgical site infections. The center boasts a 100% survival rate for complex procedures, including arterial switch operations and Tetralogy of Fallot repairs. Innovative programs such as Hearts to Home, the Lymphatic Evaluation and Interventional Program and the Reduction of Readmission Program have helped improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital stays. The center also utilizes cutting-edge technology, such as a hybrid cardiac cath-MRI suite and a new heart valve stent, to provide advanced care to patients. Children's Health has received various recognitions for its achievements, including being ranked as the busiest pediatric heart transplant program in the country with a 0% mortality rate for the past two years. The Heart Center at Children's Health also boasts nearly $1 million in research funding and impressive quality metrics.

Children's Hospital Colorado (Aurora). The Heart Institute at Children's Colorado is nationally ranked for heart care and surgery by U.S. News & World Report, consistently achieving top rankings from Healthgrades, CMS and The Leapfrog Group. Home to over 90 pediatric cardiac providers, the institute offers specialized programs ranging from pulmonary hypertension to cardiac genetics and neurodevelopment care. It is the largest pediatric cardiac surgery program in the state and the only one to offer pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the region. Recent innovations include groundbreaking research in areas such as single ventricle heart conditions and advanced cardiac imaging, supported by over $10 million in external grant funding. The institute has a 97.9% cardiac surgery survival rate and high transplant success rates, reinforcing its commitment to delivering the highest quality of care.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles. The Heart Institute at Children's Hospital Los Angeles is a pediatric cardiology and heart surgery program nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The institute is the home of the largest congenital heart program on the West Coast. With over 800 cardiac surgeries performed annually, CHLA boasts survival rates significantly higher than the national average. The institute's cardiology program handles over 14,500 outpatient visits per year, offering advanced imaging, minimally invasive catheterization and comprehensive diagnostic testing. CHLA's recent innovations include the opening of a state-of-the-art fetal cardiac clinic, which provides top-tier prenatal care. The institute has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical‐Care Nurses and the Gold Level ELSO Center of Excellence award.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. With more than 1,000 team members, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has one of the largest pediatric cardiac centers in North America, offering cutting-edge diagnostics and advanced treatments for complex heart conditions to children from around the world. CHOP’s cardiac center serves among the highest volume of patients with rare and high-risk conditions, performing more of the most complicated procedures than any U.S. pediatric hospital. Each year, over 2,500 patients are admitted to the center’s units, and its team performs more than 60,000 diagnostic tests, 900 cardiac surgeries inclusive of over 500 open-heart surgeries, and 1,400 cardiac catheterizations. The center’s state-of-the-art facilities include the cardiac operative and imaging complex, which has six operating and hybrid suites exclusively for cardiac care, as well as four cardiac inpatient units with 71 beds exclusively for cardiac patients. The center is home to innovative programs that treat lymphatic leaks and flow disorders, provide diagnostics, surgical intervention, transcatheter procedures and advanced imaging for valve disease patients, identify molecular therapeutic targets that significantly improve clinical care and disease management for heart failure patients, and more.

Children's Mercy (Kansas City, Mo.). The Ward Family Heart Center at Children's Mercy Kansas City boasts a bed count of 390, including the dedicated 24-bed Haverty Family Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The department features 35 cardiologists, four cardiothoracic surgeons, 37 advanced practice providers, and seven fellows. Children's Mercy Kansas City has been a trailblazer in pediatric cardiac surgery, sharing surgical outcomes publicly and achieving a 100% one-year patient survival rate post-heart transplant. The center is also a regional leader in ventricular assist device patient volume and has successfully performed heart transplants on single ventricle patients at all three stages of repair. Additionally, the hospital has innovative programs like Thrive for emotional support and CHAMP for at-home monitoring of complex congenital heart disease patients. Advanced services include leadless pacemaker implantation and a digital tool called MyHeartArt for personalized anatomical illustrations of heart defects. Children's Minnesota (Minneapolis). Children's Minnesota's cardiovascular program consists of 20 pediatric cardiologists, three board-certified congenital heart surgeons and 200 dedicated cardiovascular professionals. With a bed count of 34, this program treats more pediatric cardiovascular patients than any other program in the Upper Midwest, offering services from fetal detection to young adult care. The program's Edward J. Phillips Cardiovascular Care Center provides state-of-the-art technology, including a cardiac hybrid operating room, and 24/7 pediatric cardiac intensivists. Additionally, the program's outpatient clinic, the Children's Heart Clinic, offers care at nine different locations for added convenience to patient families. Children's Minnesota is known for its innovative services, such as its heart failure and heart transplant program, pediatric electrophysiology studies lab and single ventricle home monitoring program. The program also utilizes technology like the world's first photon-counting CT scanner, and has received recognition for its high-quality care through organizations like The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and U.S. News & World Report.

Christiana Hospital (Newark, Del.). Christiana Hospital is a 1,039-bed facility that delivers care comparable to large-scale teaching hospitals. Over 1,400 physicians and surgeons are part of ChristianaCare's medical-dental staff. The hospital's Center for Heart & Vascular Health features cutting-edge cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, cardiac rehabilitation and preventive medicine. Annually, the center's medical team conducts over 1,000 open-heart surgeries, thousands of diagnostic and interventional procedures, and participates in nearly 50 clinical trials. Recognized for its excellence in heart care, Christiana Hospital received the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award for 2022-24 from Healthgrades.

Cincinnati Children's. Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute, part of the Cincinnati Children's health system with a total of 720 beds, boasts a team of 135 physicians, researchers and fellows. The institute has achieved favorable outcomes for pediatric cardiac surgical procedures, particularly for complex cases. With nearly 26,000 outpatient visits and over 480 cardiothoracic surgeries performed in the last fiscal year, the institute has a strong focus on research, with 78 faculty members publishing 496 papers during the same period. Innovative clinical programs such as the Fontan Multidisciplinary Clinic and advanced research in transplant technologies, including the first-ever sequential lung-then-heart transplant, showcase the cutting-edge work done at Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute. The institute is expanding access to high-quality heart care through numerous clinic locations, a mobile care center and telehealth services. Additionally, they are leaders in virtual surgery planning and the development of digital healthcare solutions. Cleveland Clinic also offers virtual visits for convenient, high-quality care. Cedars-Sinai (Los Angeles). Cedars-Sinai is renowned for its clinical excellence, advanced technologies and pioneering research in cardiology. The organization's initiatives include groundbreaking studies in AI, population health and innovative treatments for heart disease in women. The cardiology department's investigator-initiated studies have enhanced prediction capabilities for sudden cardiac arrest and challenged conventional views on heart rhythm conditions. Home to the Center for Cardiac Arrest Prevention and the Smidt Heart Institute, Cedars-Sinai attracts top physician-scientists globally, fostering innovation and teamwork. Cedars Sinai Medical Center, named the best in California and No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24 for cardiology, heart and vascular surgey, features the largest cardiothoracic transplant center in California and third-largest in the U.S. With 706 heart and dual heart/lung transplants over six years, it leads the nation in volume.

Corewell Health-William Beaumont University Hospital (Royal Oak, Mich.). The heart and vascular program at Corewell Health offers a complete continuum of services for cardiovascular care. Their state-of-the-art facilities include three cardiovascular surgery operating rooms, a hybrid structural heart lab, nine cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs, and a bioskills lab for fostering innovation and program development. A fourth cardiovascular surgery operating room and second hybrid structural lab is opening by the end of 2024. Supported by over 100 employed and independent cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and vascular surgeons, the center performed 7,275 cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures, 597 open heart procedures and 292 transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures in 2023. The hospital also offers a premier cardiac CT program, performing over 4,000 cardiac CTs last year alone with sustained year-over-year growth. With the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center, the two centers were first in the Midwest to successfully treat patients with innovative technology that uses pulsed electric fields to address atrial fibrillation. Deaconess Health System (Evansville, Ind.). Deaconess offers a full spectrum of services, from preventive care to complex surgeries. Deaconess was among the first to implement the WATCHMAN device and has performed over 450 left atrial appendage occlusion procedures. It is also a leader in transcatheter aortic valve replacement, MitraClip, and pulse field ablations. The hospital boasts a high patient satisfaction score of 91.6% and has received numerous accolades, including being named a top heart hospital in Indiana by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024. With the largest cardiovascular team in the tri-state area, Deaconess ensures personalized and comprehensive care for every patient.

Duke Health (Durham, N.C.). Duke's cardiology division functions as a global leader in research, clinical care and education. Led by internationally recognized physicians, the division excels in patient care, teaching and groundbreaking research, contributing significantly to the genomics and genetics field. The Duke Clinical Research Institute, a premier academic research organization, spearheads clinical research by utilizing the world's oldest and largest cardiovascular outcomes databank. Duke's cardiology program boasts over 2,000 heart transplants since 1985 and consistently ranks among the nation's best for cardiac care and surgery. Their high-volume patient care results in superior outcomes, fewer complications and better long-term survival rates. In addition, the organization's emergency response protocol for heart attacks has notably improved survival rates across the state. Emory Healthcare (Atlanta). Emory Healthcare’s Heart & Vascular Center excels in comprehensive heart care, offering personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs. The center boasts 10 specialty programs and 23 clinics, treating everything from erratic heartbeats to severe disorders. Emory’s cardiologists, many of whom are faculty at Emory University School of Medicine, are renowned for their pioneering work in heart care and have trained 85% of Georgia’s cardiologists and heart surgeons. The center is a global leader in managing heart failure, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease. Emory’s commitment to cutting-edge treatments and preventative care is bolstered by its involvement in translational research, connecting lab discoveries to clinical applications. Recognized for its advanced therapies and innovative approaches, the Emory University Hospital cardiology program is high performing in cardiology and ranked as No. 1 in Georgia and in Atlanta according to U.S. News & World Report

Endeavor Health Cardiovascular Institute (Evanston, Ill.). Franciscan Health Indianapolis was named No. 1 in Indiana for cardiology by Healthgrades for 2024, among other recognitions. 

Froedtert Hospital (Milwaukee). Froedtert's heart and vascular team offers comprehensive programs for diagnosing and treating heart and vascular diseases, employing the latest technologies and techniques. Their multidisciplinary approach applies the expertise of cardiologists, heart surgeons, vascular surgeons, electrophysiologists and interventional radiologists, ensuring personalized and effective care for each patient. As an academic medical center, Froedtert is at the forefront of research and education, offering patients access to clinical trials for new treatments. In its 2024 Specialty Excellence Awards, Healthgrades named Froedtert Hospital among America's 50 best hospitals for cardiac surgery and one of the 100 best for cardiac care and coronary intervention. For the second consecutive year, Froedtert was also recognized as one of the nation's 50 top cardiovascular hospitals by PINC AI and Fortune, highlighting its superior outcomes and cost efficiency. Hackensack Meridian Health (Edison, N.J.). Hackensack University Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center have both achieved top rankings, including being named the best cardiology, heart and vascular surgery program in New Jersey by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024. Innovations include high-volume minimally invasive cardiac surgeries and advanced heart failure treatments. Jersey Shore University Medical Center's achievements include new clinical trials in structural heart and heart failure and high rankings in cardiac surgery volumes. HMH's comprehensive research efforts include participation in 106 clinical trials and over 525 publications since 2019, enhancing patient care through scientific advancements. The cardiovascular program's excellence is further validated by multiple recognitions from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare. Hartford HealthCare is a national leader in heart disease prevention, treatment, surgery and research, offering coordinated, evidence-based care through its Heart and Vascular Institute. Patients can access services from board-certified cardiologists in outpatient settings, emergency services via LIFE STAR helicopter, or at one of its seven hospitals, including a tertiary care level teaching hospital. The institute provides advanced treatments such as robotic surgery and procedures in cardiology, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology and more. The Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Hartford Hospital received the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center Award from the American Heart Association and the Mitral Foundation for superior clinical outcomes in mitral valve repair. Additionally, Healthgrades recognized the institute as one of America’s best hospitals for cardiac surgery, coronary intervention and cardiac care for 2024.

Specializing in areas like heart failure, atrial fibrillation and cardiac rehabilitation, the system caters to critically ill patients, including those turned away by other hospitals. Recognized as the best in Kansas City and Kansas by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-24, it was also the first to receive the Comprehensive Cardiac Center certification from The Joint Commission. 

University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). The University of Maryland Heart and Vascular Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical System, boasts 860 beds. With a team of 27 cardiologists, 11 cardiac surgeons and 18 vascular surgeons, the center is a national leader in minimally invasive treatments and advanced cardiac care. Annually, the team handles over 12,000 patients, performs approximately 1,500 coronary interventions, and implants over 1,000 pacemakers and defibrillators. VCU Health (Richmond, Va.). Established over 20 years ago, VCU Health's Pauley Heart Center is Virginia’s top-ranked heart center and one of the few named heart centers in the nation. Based at VCU Health and with outpatient centers across central and southeast Virginia, the heart center offers comprehensive clinical services and community education programs. Its mission is to improve cardiovascular care and reduce health disparities through interdisciplinary research, education and innovative care. The heart center is a leader in fields like electrophysiology, advanced cardiac imaging, heart failure treatments and cardio-oncology, operating specialized clinics for conditions such as cardiac amyloidosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.).
