Alabama police confirmed an officer-involved shooting on the campus of UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham Aug. 13 that left one man dead.
The incident occurred around 12:35 p.m. when an officer with the Birmingham Police Department attempted to detain a suspect for allegedly assaulting an employee at a McDonald’s near the hospital campus, Police Chief Michael Pickett said during a news conference streamed live on the department’s Facebook page Aug. 13.
The suspect ran from the officer who chased him into the hospital’s north parking deck, according to Mr. Pickett. Inside the deck, the officer told him to stop, the man did not, and the officer used his Taser, Mr. Pickett said. The man then tried to grab the Taser, and the officer drew and fired his gun, striking him. Emergency personnel responded, and the man died of his injuries.
“We are grateful that no patients or employees were involved or injured in today’s incident. The scene is secure, and there is no active threat to the UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham campus,” a hospital spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker’s, referring further questions to police.
The officer, a seven-year department veteran, has been placed on administrative leave amid an investigation of the incident, Mr. Pickett said. The department’s homicide division is leading the investigation and will turn its findings over to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office for an independent review.
