Louisiana's Civil Service Commission will let Louisiana State University pay bonuses to employees to keep Huey P. Long Medical Center in Pineville, La., staffed until its planned shutdown, according to a report by The Advocate.
In September, LSU's board of supervisors approved a plan to close Huey P. Long and direct patients to Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, La., but there is no set date for the shutdown.
As a result of that announcement, Huey P. Long has faced problems maintaining staffing levels and with employee absenteeism, according to The Advocate. The bonuses would encourage the hospital's roughly 220 employees to stay at work until the closure.
To receive the bonus, employees would have to work an average of 72 hours during an 80-hour pay period and stay employed until they are laid off, according to the report. The bonus amount has not yet been determined, as funding for the bonuses is still uncertain.
There is no guarantee that employees at Huey P. Long will be offered jobs at Rapides or Christus St. Francis Cabrini.
