Pittsburgh-based UPMC has completed its acquisition of Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Health System from Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health, with ownership transferring Oct. 1.

The deal marks UPMC’s first move into the Ohio market. The transaction includes Trinity West and Trinity East in Steubenville; Trinity Twin City Medical Center in Dennison, Ohio; Trinity St. Clairsville (Ohio) Neighborhood Hospital; and all associated clinics and care sites, according to a Sept. 30 news release.

Trinity and CommonSpirit leaders began searching in early 2025 for a regional health system that could enhance Trinity’s services and clinical offerings. UPMC and CommonSpirit signed a nonbinding letter of intent in October 2025, followed by a definitive agreement in May to transfer ownership of the system. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“By integrating Trinity Health System into UPMC, we are building upon a foundation of trusted collaboration to ensure that high-quality, patient-centered care remains accessible and sustainable for years to come,” said Dwayne Richardson, interim market president of CommonSpirit Trinity Health System.

UPMC employs 100,000 people and operates more than 40 hospitals and 800 outpatient sites across Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Maryland.
