Healthcare M&A Up 11% in 2011

In 2011, 980 healthcare merger and acquisition deals were recorded, worth $227.4 billion, up 11 percent from $205.6 billion in 2010, according to an Irving Levin Associates report.

In 2011, healthcare services accounted for 545 deals, or 56 percent of the total deal volume, with technology accounting for the remaining 435 deals. This is a departure from previous years when technology deals represented greater volumes.

Among individual healthcare sectors, the medical device industry experienced 170 deals, followed by long-term care (161 deals), pharmaceuticals (115 deals) and physician groups (107 deals). The behavioral health (12 deals) and rehabilitation (14 deals) sectors experienced the most sluggish deal volume, according to the report.
