West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill., is appealing a decision from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to revoke its residency program accreditation.

The hospital’s parent company, Resilience Healthcare, shared the update in a March 7 statement.

“We look forward to defending our record and showcasing the strength of our residency program during the AGCME appeals process,” Manoj Prasad, MD, PhD, CEO of the hospital, said in the statement. “We are also reviewing the notification for errors or inaccurate information.”

“While we prepare our appeal, the current residency program will continue. For residents who wish to transfer to another hospital, we will work with them to provide the support they need in a transition. Meantime, we are confident our doctors, nurses and staff will continue to provide the excellent healthcare our patients and the community expect from West Suburban Medical Center,”

The ACGME has not publicly stated why it moved to revoke accreditation, though residents have previously raised concerns about staffing shortages, lack of supplies and management at the hospital, which they say pose significant risks to patient safety, according to reports from local news outlets.

Resilience acquired West Suburban and Chicago-based Weiss Memorial Hospital in 2022 for $92 million. In its statement March 7, the company said it has added 200 staff members and invested “milllions” in new equipment over the past two years.

Becker’s has reached out to West Suburban Medical Center and the ACGME. The report will be updated as more information becomes available.
