Cleveland Clinic taps AI to automate administrative workflows

Cleveland Clinic is partnering with AI automation company Luminai to automate complex administrative workflows across the health system.

The health system will initially use Luminai’s technology to automate the processing of external referrals, according to a Sept. 9 news release.

Many external referrals still arrive by fax and require staff to manually sort, prioritize and enter information into the electronic medical record. Luminai’s AI system is designed to identify referral documents, interpret their clinical context, match patients and order types, and enter the information into the EMR for follow-up.

Cleveland Clinic and Luminai plan to use lessons from the referral deployment to identify other administrative processes that involve large amounts of unstructured documentation, manual handoffs and time-sensitive decision-making.

As part of the partnership, Luminai engineers will work alongside Cleveland Clinic clinical and operational teams to customize automation workflows rather than deploy a standardized configuration.
