Environmental consciousness has permeated its way into the supply chains of many industries, and currently, 54 percent of hospital executives believe green attributes are important in their purchasing decisions, according to a study by Johnson & Johnson.
J&J commissioned SK&A to conduct global research on sustainable products within the healthcare industry, and 145 U.S. hospitals and healthcare organizations participated in the study.
When it came to purchasing of products and supplies, specifically pharmaceuticals, devices and diagnostics, 54 percent of hospitals said it was "extremely important" their purchasing decisions involve an environmental point of view. Forty percent said it was somewhat important, while 6 percent said it was not important.
Here are other findings from the study:
• Purchasing and materials management (42 percent) was the most interested hospital group when it came to sustainable healthcare products. The C-suite represented 21 percent, while physicians comprised 9 percent.
• The top-rated attributes of green products by hospitals and healthcare organizations were products free of heavy metals, supplier end-of-life solutions, energy efficiency and products free of latex.
• Thirty-five percent of hospitals have switched suppliers due to additional green/sustainable product offerings.
