Williamsburg, Va.-based Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center has earned provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center designation from the Virginia Department of Health.
The designation followed years of preparation and a site review in June, according to a Sept. 28 news release. It authorizes the hospital to operate as a Level III Adult Trauma Center for one year.
The hospital provides 24/7 access to emergency medicine and surgical services, including trauma, general and orthopedic surgery. The designation fills a gap in trauma services between Newport News and Richmond, Va., providing EMS teams in Williamsburg, James City County, York County and the Upper Peninsula with a closer option for transporting trauma patients.
After the provisional period, the Virginia Department of Health will conduct a follow-up site review to evaluate the hospital for full Level III designation.
