Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Alliance broke ground Aug. 10 on its Franciscan Alliance School of Osteopathic Medicine.
The school is expected to open in 2030, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
The Franciscan Alliance School of Osteopathic Medicine’s first class is expected to comprise 100 medical students. Enrollment is planned to annually expand to 200 students per class, with a goal to reach a total enrollment of 800 students, the release said.
Franciscan is also developing plans to expand its number of post-graduate residency slots by more than 250 in Indiana.
“Like many states across the U.S., Indiana is experiencing a physician shortage, most notably in primary care and in rural areas,” the release said. “Franciscan’s new medical school and postgraduate residency programs aim to help lessen the shortage of healthcare professionals in Indiana.”
The health system is working to select an administrative staff of experienced medical school leaders and physicians to complete its planning process. Its target student body will comprise residents of Indiana and other Midwestern states seeking a faith-based medical education, as well as those interested in practicing medicine in Indiana with Franciscan and its affiliated partners.
Franciscan Alliance is a Catholic healthcare system that comprises 11 hospital campuses and more than 16,000 employees, the release said.
Becker’s reached out to Franciscan Alliance regarding project cost, but the system declined to provide it.
