Healthcare Job Growth Hits 10-Year Low

The healthcare sector added just 2,500 jobs in July, the lowest monthly gain for the industry since July 2003, according to the latest labor brief from the Altarum Institute based on July 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Hospitals specifically have lost 13,000 jobs in the last three months, according to the brief.

Despite the paltry job gains in the healthcare industry, it is "too soon" to say this is the start of the anticipated healthcare hiring slowdown, according to the brief. "It is not unusual to see three months in a row of below average healthcare job growth, followed by a rebound — we saw this as recently as a year ago," the brief authors noted.
