Nurses have an array of job opportunities at their disposal. That includes opportunities outside the hospital setting.
Here are five nonhospital nursing jobs for nurses, as stated by Nurse Journal.
Nurse Health Coach. A registered nurse may call themselves a "nurse coach" while staying within their scope of practice when coaching patients without additional certification. By acting as a "nurse coach," these workers may legally start their own business and coach others in their area of expertise. Additionally, many insurance companies hire nurses as health coaches, Nurse Journal notes.
Life Care Planner. A nurse has can become a life care planner to help terminally ill, or long-term medically needy patients with their plan of care. They must have previous experience to become certified.
Nurse Navigator. Some nurses may find their niche in owning a business as a nurse navigator, especially if they understand insurance policies. Nurses who enjoy paperwork and research in addition to helping connect patients with appropriate care providers may be ideal for this role, according to Nurse Journal.
Academic Nurse Writer. Nurses who earned a graduate degree in nursing and excel in writing could author textbook chapters in their specialty and/or obtain a publisher to write their own book. This is closely aligned with nurse education.
Legal Nurse Consultant. Legal nurse consultants help attorneys interpret medical records and serve as expert witnesses. Training and certification is required for this business opportunity.
