Introduction to the Quantros® Value-Based Care Factoid Series
Powered by the world’s largest real-world evidence base on patient safety and healthcare quality, the Quantros Value-based Care Factoid Series provides informative indicators and measures of clinical and financial performance that matter in value-based reimbursement and payment models.
Delivered in partnership with Becker’s Hospital Review, we are confident these research insights and greater transparency will help all stakeholders to accurately measure and benchmark progress on the journey to value-based, higher-quality and safer care.
June 2017 Value-based Care Factoid
Nearly 20% of all opioid medication errors reported in acute care hospital settings in 2016 occurred during administration. Opioid-related adverse drug events are common in hospitalized patients, estimated to result in a 20% increase in length of stay (LOS) and a 16% increase in cost of care.

Opioid adverse events, including medication errors, are inextricably linked to risk-adjusted measures of quality, patient safety and outcomes in connection federal pay-for-performance reporting programs which impact a rising share of a hospital’s total reimbursement.
- Poorly controlled surgical pain remains as one of the most common reason for re-admissions, including those which are measured in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP). The HRRP penalizes hospitals by as much as 3% of their total inpatient Medicare revenues.
- Although CMS has removed the pain management dimension of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey for FY 2018, such measures impact total performance in the CMS Value Based Purchasing Program which VBP affect 2.0% of IPPS hospitals’ Base Operating DRG in FY 2017
The Quantros® Opioid Adverse Events Benchmarking Study assessed the frequency, severity and the most common contributory factors of medication errors, including opioid errors, reported by 321 acute care hospitals and other facilities across the continuum of care in 43 U.S. States using Quantros® Safety Event Manager, an incident reporting and risk management solution used by over 250,000 clinicians to monitor, measure and improve patient safety and quality.
