The Volusia/Flagler division of Florida Hospital headquartered in Daytona Beach is working with a health insurance company to offer a health plan to community members starting in January 2014, according to a Daytona Beach News-Journal report.
Florida Hospital, part of Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System, has five hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties. Florida Hospital is working with Rockledge, Fla.-based Health First Health Plans to create the plan, and the two are in the "initial planning stages," according to the report. The health plan is expected to focus on preventive health measures.
Daryl Tol, CEO of Florida Hospital's Volusia/Flagler division, told the News-Journal that the system wants its own health plan option for patients because "we have to be able to provide a cradle-to-grave option for our community that allows them to have access to wellness and prevention," according to the report.
Several other health systems have begun forming their own health plans in the past year. In November, Fountain Valley, Calif.-based MemorialCare Health System announced it will launch its own health plan, Seaside Health Plan, pending a license through the California Department of Managed Health Care. In December, Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta and WellStar Health System in Marietta, Ga., announced they are developing a health insurance plan together.
