In 2012, approximately $3 billion was returned to the federal government following suits filed under the False Claims Act, according to a report in Lexology.
This trend of high returns is on track to continue in 2013, spurred by the updated self-disclosure protocol, increased whistle-blower rewards and no final ruling from CMS on Medicare and Medicaid overpayments in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the report.
