Dr. Donald Berwick May Run for Governor of Massachusetts

Donald Berwick, MD, former head of CMS and mind behind healthcare reform's "triple aim," is mulling a 2014 run for governor of Massachusetts, according to a Boston Globe report.

In a recess appointment, President Barack Obama named Dr. Berwick CMS administrator in April 2010, but his tenure was complicated by Senate Republicans, many of whom vowed to block the president's confirmation of Dr. Berwick as CMS head. The pediatrician stepped down in November 2011, slightly earlier than his scheduled departure at the end of 2011.

Dr. Berwick said he has considered a run for the past two or three months, according to the report. He said his final decision would come soon after he meets with more political veterans and consultants.

The physician's potential candidacy may create an "interesting clash" with Republican healthcare executive Charles Baker Jr., according to the report. Mr. Baker, former CEO of Wellesley, Mass.-based health insurer Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, is reportedly considering a gubernatorial run after losing to current Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick in 2010.

In his time as CMS administrator, Dr. Berwick helped cement the concept of healthcare reform's triple aim, which consists of three goals: to provide safer and more patient-centered care to patients, to improve population health and to reduce per-capita spending costs.
