Ailing Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island May Shut Down Obstetrics

The Westerly (R.I.) Hospital may discontinue obstetrics services by this June due to continued financial struggles, according to a report from The Day.

Mark Russo, JD, who is overseeing the hospital's receivership process, told The Day that the hospital's birth services will last "at least up and until June 1."

Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn., will be the new owner of The Westerly Hospital after submitting an offer of $69 million. However, L&M officials are still awaiting regulatory approval from the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.

Mr. Russo said he will work with L+M during the transition "to present a plan for continuing women's health services at The Westerly Hospital after the mastership concludes its operation," according to the report. The hospital manages roughly 300 births per year.
